He is one of the two great attendants of Amitābha Buddha in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss, assisting the Buddha together with Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva in guiding and benefiting sentient beings.
In Tibetan Buddhist artistic representations, Mahāsthāmaprāpta Bodhisattva is often depicted seated upon a lotus throne, with both hands forming a sacred mudra. Pure lotus blossoms emerge gracefully from his shoulders, and a precious vase is placed within his crown. These are the most distinctive features used to identify his image. The vase symbolizes the radiant wisdom that illuminates the world, dispelling confusion, restlessness, and ignorance.
The name “Mahāsthāmaprāpta” represents the supreme power of diligence and perseverance.
In Buddhist teachings, Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva represents compassion, while Mahāsthāmaprāpta Bodhisattva represents wisdom. Compassion guides us to maintain kindness in our hearts, while wisdom teaches us to make clear and mindful choices.
